This week, our budding chefs put their culinary skills to the test in an exciting Home Science cookery lesson, preparing a delicious serving of Matoke, a beloved local banana dish.
“Cooking is like a science experiment, you mix things and create something amazing” Tr. Agnes encouraged as she guided the eager learners through the steps. With their aprons neatly tied, the young chefs gathered around their workstations, ready to transform simple bananas into a mouthwatering meal.
The morning kicked off with eager little hands washing, peeling, and slicing fresh bananas, an exercise in both patience and precision. “Eeeh, this banana is slippery!” Dylan giggled, struggling to hold onto his Matoke, as his classmates laughed along. Meanwhile, Shanice, focused like a pro, carefully chopped her pieces with impressive skill.
Guided by their teachers, the learners explored the importance of hygiene, safety, and teamwork in the kitchen. Then came the real fun; frying! The aroma of onions, ginger, and tomatoes sizzling in the pan filled the room. “This smells like my grandma’s kitchen!” Ines beamed as she helped stir. One by one, they added carrots, dhania, and cucumbers, watching in awe as the ingredients transformed into a rich, colorful dish.
As they finally sat down to enjoy their Matoke masterpiece, the smiles and satisfied nods said it all. The learners couldn’t wait to dig in! “Mmmh… It’s soft, tasty, and spicy in a good way” Ines exclaimed, while Dylan nodded in approval, already helping himself to a second serving.
